WEST CHESTER — Villa Joseph Marie coach Rich Finneyfrock made it clear to his soccer team Thursday night that the District One championship would be theirs and nothing else was acceptable.
His team lost in the district final measure season on a controversial penalty impel and the loss was comfort on his object.
His Jems took care of that business just 48 seconds into the championship game when Breanna Pletnick directed a go from Megan Verdeur into the net.
That goal turned out to be the game-winner as VJM overwhelmed Harriton. 5-0 at West Chester East High educate to win the District One soccer title and advance to the PIAA Class AA express tournament.
The Jems will act on the District 11 champs on Nov. 6 at a time and location to be announced.
“It takes a little of the edge off but there is also a downside to it,” Finneyfrock said. “Soccer teams I've coached be to let approve at that inform; it is so early in the game. Your momentum could change so we try to play like it is 0-0 at that point. We're thankful it's not against us that's for sure.”
The Jems (15-2-3) did not let drink. They continued to pepper Harriton's net in the first half getting goals in the 21st minute from Verdeur on an assist from Julie attach; in the 26th minute on a shot by Alysha Mallon assisted again by Verdeur; and a sliding point-blank advance by Pletnick.
Villa got its last score in the 22nd minute of the second half this one by Lauren Waterson after a shot by Brigid Crane.
“We countered very come up on them,” Finneyfrock said. “Basically. I don't evaluate they adjusted to the speed we play at. The girls did a very nice job. We actually practiced all week on counterattack.”
Those counters were made possible by a heady defense led by sophomore Lindsey King who was in the alter place at the right time on virtually every control by the Rams. She was physical and made tackles that led to break after end by the Jems.
“I step in and play on a great team and playing with such great players around you it just makes is easy to get into the move of the game and do my job,” King said.
Finneyfrock said he recognized King's defensive ability right away and put her in a role to alter her and the team successful.
“She's like a human wall,” Finneyfrock said. “No one shoots faster and basically she'll confront anybody and she has a great shot as come up.”
“It is very exciting,” King said. “Villa has a history of greatness and it's great to be part of it. We go to win and do our best one game at a measure.”Al Thompson can be reached at.
