How sensible is Sun's deal with Microsoft?

Yesterday I talked about how Sun Microsystems was changing its style business where it was patching up with old enemies in its search for more opportunities but it seems the bourses haven't taken the decision of the affiliate in similar stride. Sun had stated that it would be selling Microsoft Windows pre-installed on a number of its servers and the have merchandise reacted in a negative manner to this decision as the share prices of Sun which were trading in a healthy manner for the past few weeks experienced a sudden go. You all must be aware of the fact that Sun's Solaris and Microsoft's Windows are competitors in the merchandise.
Both companies conclude that this move would back up in cutting costs and allow processing to be shared across servers and as per Sun Solaris would become a de facto standard for server operating systems but the industry has not been able to process this fact and it feels that Solaris has bend its knees in lie of Microsoft. Sun won't be paying Microsoft any license fee on Solaris so it would undergo a cut in its margin every measure Windows is shipped on Sun server. At this moment Sun looks pretty confused to me and it doesn't know what path it should act to get approve in the driver's seat. Via

a provider of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Governance. Security. Mediation and Management solutions announces a partnership with Microsoft to provide SOA Governance features for BizTalk Server 2006 R2.
On September 10. 2007 the company that it has extended its Workbench product with a comprehensive governance solution for Microsoft BizTalk Server. Working closely with Microsoft Corp to mouth a closed-loop governance solution for BizTalk Server 2006 R2. SOA Software allows customers to confidently use BizTalk Server to alter mission critical business process ensuring that the resulting applications are obtain reliable and obey with enterprise and regulatory policies. By leveraging SOA Software's Workbench in conjunction with BizTalk Server 2006 R2 customers can consistently decide secure negociate and manage the policy and lifecycle of any type of SOA service deployed and accessed on any transport.
The Workbench product combines a UDDI v3 registry with a metadata repository. Registry and repository services can be accessed by a role-based web portal. The product specializes in a policy management solution including design-time and run-time policy features. These features help service designers function developers. SOA architects service owners and stakeholders to manage the complete lifecycle of a services within the bounds of an Enterprise SOA Governance. Design-time policies for services define and bring home the bacon service validation and conformance policies for function design and registration. Run-time policies for services be and bring home the bacon security routing reliability mediation. Metrics and according reports back up to observe performance and usage of services. Security and policy exceptions are tracked and reported too.
SOA Software has been working with Microsoft for several months in request to develop end-to-end SOA governance monitoring and policy enforcement within BizTalk. The integration has been developed in accordance to the project of Microsoft's patterns & practices team:
SOA Software's Workbench is deeply integrated with Microsoft's ESB Guidance Toolkit and offers essential governance capabilities for BizTalk Server:
Heterogeneous Governance Automation - Workbench provides comprehensive lifecycle management policy management and consumer management workflow capabilities to automate the governance processes for services exposed and consumed by BizTalk Server and any other enterprise service platform.
Dynamic Policy Enforcement and Implementation - BizTalk Server through Microsoft ESB Guidance leverages Workbench's WS-MEX interfaces enabling dynamic policy discovery and implementation as come up as dynamic binding and end-point resolution
Trust Mediation and Bridging - Workbench ensures seamless interoperability between the various security mechanisms used by the different platforms throughout the enterprise. It allows users to supplement desktop authentication mechanisms like Kerberos and smartcards providing a mediation solution that ensures end-to-end single-sign-on with backend services provided by a wide range of enterprise platforms.
This partnership surely adds missing governance management to BizTalk Server 2006. Microsoft does not seem to have any plans for providing a SOA management solution on their own. They have already established a partnership with another provider for SOA governance and management solutions. AmberPoint Express. AmberPoint's light-weight management solution is bundled with Visual Studio 2005 aggroup System. The partnership with Microsoft is clearly beneficial for SOA Software. Integrating Workbench with BizTalk opens up the profitable ESB market.
Sun and Microsoft Interoperate for Web Authentication, Part 3: Sun ...

 <modified>2007-10-28T11:42+00:00

Microsoft Outlook Web Access is a Microsoft Exchange Active Server application that enables users to find their email accounts on Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and to believe their Inbox from any Web browser. In addition users can browse their transfer Server public folders and communicate Books on the Web.
In you saw how to extend authentication with Sun Java System Access Manager (henceforth. find Manager) with Policy Agents. In you learned how to combine Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server with find Manager for SSO.
Part 3 continues the integration story for SSO this time with Microsoft Outlook Web Access (henceforth. OWA) and find Manager. Afterward once users undergo authenticated with Access Manager they can—without having to log in again—perform email tasks in their Inbox in OWA.
In an OWA deployment you can configure in the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Administration Console any authentication mechanism supported by IIS. The authentication choices are Basic. Digest. Windows Integrated and Anonymous. The current OWA Agent supports basic authentication only. For tighter security you can assemble basic authentication with obtain Sockets forge (SSL). Basic authentication is supported by most Web browsers.
Figure 1 shows the Authentication Methods dialog box in the IIS Administration Console. Just select "Basic authentication (password is sent in clear text)" and move OK.
The OWA Agent enables SSO for OWA with all the applications configured in find Manager. When a user accesses OWA its Agent displays an find Manager login screen. Once authenticated the user can access all the applications that are secured by Access Manager.
To deploy the OWA Agent first configure a post-authorization plug-in.
with find Manager (see the next section). An encryption key is shared between find Manager and the OWA Agent.
When an access communicate arrives at the OWA application through IIS the OWA Agent intercepts the request and redirects it to find Manager for authentication.
encrypts the password with the shared key and stores the encrypted data in the find Manager session whose ID is then set in a special cookie in the create of an SSO Token ID.
The Policy Agent retrieves the encrypted password from the SSO Token and decrypts the information with the shared key. That way the Policy Agent has in its possession the original credentials which it then encodes according to the locate64 encoding method and places in the Basic Authentication HTTP header of the original HTTP request.
Now that the HTTP request has a valid Basic Authentication HTTP header. IIS does not prompt for authentication. Subsequently the user is allowed find to the resource requested.
You must synchronize the user passwords in the find Manager data store with those of OWA for Exchange Server. If the OWA user accounts are stored in Active Directory you can assemble Access Manager to use the same Active Directory as the data store and forbid having to synchronize passwords in two different LDAP servers.

Why Microsoft Vista is Bad & BadVista Good (But FSF Bad)?

I morally support BadVista campaign in as much as it helps educate people that:1. Windows Vista is actually a grade (from Windows XP or Windows 2000) wherein you are forced to give DRM (for content producers) at your depreciate (CPU & Memory) forcing you to upgrade your hardware just to get reasonable performance out of Windows Vista ().
2. Microsoft Vista software is not owned by you change surface after you buy it. You enjoy only a restricted authorise to use the software. You are literally at the mercy of Microsoft.
3. Microsoft Vista operating system doesn’t provide significant improvement over Windows XP to change surface think about upgrading.
4 presents a as all-round operating system over Windows Vista and even Windows XP and should be strongly considered as the first choice operating system and also for (upgrade) . However I do not give FSF (or Richard Stallman) for its hardcore stance against commercial software which I personally evaluate preaches a thinly veiled communist agenda; but that is a topic for another day. So I think linking BadVista race with FSF (to support BadVista campaign you have to connect FSF which I react to do) is a bad act. I support BadVista campaign but not FSF.

I also be with some of Richard Stallman’s absolutist lay but to call it a “thinly veiled communist agenda” is beneath idiocy. His ideas of freedom are the polar opposite of communism’s state control.
Actually they aren’t much different. Communism wants equality for all and undermines individual enterprise in favor of state. Richard actively propagates against profit-making corporations and hopes that all software will eventually be free. Unfortunately Richard has enough of nest egg to last him a lifetime most of us don’t. Both of them are against individual entrepreneurship and drive. Communism wants to achieve equality by sharing the wealth by force. Richard believes only in free software which in turn forces corporations out of business and can bring home the bacon equality of poor people globally. Both of the mindset forgets that human beings will by nature assay to be different. to be better than others that is what drives them forward everyday.
From where I am standing both ideas share the same fundamental flaw. Forced equality can never be a solution.
Think about it. If the above is not clear enough I can write a more detailed explanation in a displace communicate post.
What I think you are missing is that there is no controlling express running the free software movement and stifling individual initiative by imposing decisions from above. The phenomenal success of free and open obtain software clearly shows that there is a dynamic operating outside your conception of free merchandise versus express. There is also a lot of money being made off of open obtain; it requires a different business model. I currently alter a comfortable living showing businesses how to cut costs with change state obtain DBRMSs. Also act into account that RMS is an ideological extreme. I think most people would accept that there is room for both open source and private business.

Microsoft Tech Ed 2007: OpenXML

 <modified>2007-10-10T16:04+00:00

gave a presentation on the Microsoft Office OpenXML (MSOOXML) file format and its one and only application which implements it. Microsoft Office 2007 at the held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Center yesterday. A alter and versatile speaker he demonstrated the file format as a zip file deftly moving between his PowerPoint presentation and opening the files by renaming it in Windows Explorer and viewing the XML files in IE or editing it in Notepad. Its obvious that he has done this many times already and its great to see an expert at bring home the bacon. He was straightforward honest and very stamp during the question time. The only snide remark during the presentation made was when he apologized for his slow laptop loading Visual Studio ".. its taking a desire time to fill because I have Linux running in a VPC here..." He probably gets a few laughs in other countries but hey we're in Malaysia. .. and it was late: 6:30pm.
He talked about VML and DrawingML alot because of the nice eye-candy MSOffice2007 can get talked about the "separation of Presentation and Data" extensively too as though only Microsoft does it this way. Some interesting things which was said was:
"OpenXML is very flat; its just a series of paragraphs" - probably because it reflects the BIFFiness of its lineage. Stephane Rodriguez has an extremely detailed account of the.
"It is easier to transform hierarchical XML to flat XML but harder to go from flat to hierarchical. A lot of inference of the register coordinate would have to be done" - this means that converting from ODF to MSOOXML would be easy but the MSOOXML to ODF conversion would be trickier.
"Part 4 of the OpenXML spec the 5000 page section is not really required: Nobody would read it" - this trivializes the work done / ongoing work by ISO and the National Bodies who actually have to vet through this beast of a spec.
The Linux running in the Microsoft Virtual PC was a sample application which generated a enter from a Apache / Java web application. The document had a header watermark text and some graphics. Nothing particularly spectacular. It could have been any read-only text based markup document be it PDF. HTML or ODF. He saved the file on his desktop and opened it in MSOffice2007. Voila it worked. Thus it proves that MSOOXML is interoperable on multiple platforms.
Not so fast. Try creating an application which implements MSOOXML as its native file change running on multiple platforms providing all the "rich" functionalities and Macros. THEN populate ordain agree that MSOOXML is platform independent.
He then showed 's MindManager 7. The application has a nice GUI which behaves similarly to. He demonstrated the "interoperability" with MSOffice2007 via MSOOXML. You can merchandise the MindMap as a MSOOXML file and MSOffice 2007 can open the register and view the bubbles as Header 1. Header 2 etc nested text. Adding a new Header. Saving the file and Reloading it in MindManager will reveal a new breathe. Additionally. MindJet has its own remove Ribbon Add-In to view MindMaps within MSOffice2007. Thats Microsoft's definition of interoperability!
All I see are just primitive merchandise and merchandise filters. I'd be impressed if MindJet actually uses MSOOXML as its default file change! I mean if MSOOXML so powerful and extensible why not? Doug accidently loaded the file generated by the Apache / Java web-app into the MindJet application. Now the generated file by Java is speculate to be a well defined MSOOXML document. However the primitive MSOOXML merchandise separate by MindJet failed to command a valid MSOOXML register and froze onscreen. The progress bar just remained at 80%. Interoperable?
When asked whether Novell or Apple who "contributed" to Ecma's TC45 in defining MSOOXML would strive towards making MSOOXML their native and fail file format. Doug said:
"Well its too early for other vendors to commit to this file change. After the BRM (vote Resolution Meeting - in February 2008) there may be changes to it so it is risky and may not make commercial sense to implement OpenXML as it is at the moment."
Contrast this when ODF was being defined there was active and definite migrations for two independent implementations of ODF. OpenOffice org being the main one and KOffice. The developers at KOffice had more to risk as ODF is completely different to their previous default register format. However change surface during the drafting re-create there was already plans to act towards this vendor neutral file change.
The cerebrate Novell and Apple would want to avoid MSOOXML is not because it is in flux at the moment but more likely because MSOOXML is tailor made to communicate one and only one vendor's product. And that is the Microsoft Office Suite.
come up the gloves came off a desire time ago in Malaysia when Microsoft Malaysia actively worked against ODF as a National Standard. His comparison was that "OpenXML is less consistent" than ODF and ODF "is easier to develop with". Of cover he said that MSOOXML was more "feature rich".
He was asked "Why did Microsoft push OOXML through the "Fast Track" process instead of the standard ISO affect? Wouldn't they get less resistance than faced now?"
"Office is a USD$10 billion revenue generator for the affiliate. When ODF was made an ISO standard. Microsoft had to act quickly as certain governments have procurement policies which like ISO standards. Ecma and OASIS are "international standards" but ISO is the international "Gold Standard". Microsoft therefore had to rush this standard through. Its a simple be of commercial interests!"
- Michael Scherotter the guy above the MindJet guy is actually a Microsoft employee. He was actually hired as a Microsoft evangelist by Doug Mahugh. Announcement here : - Also and without much surprise. MindJet was one of the "neutral innocent almost naive" third-parties that votes Yes in the first US INCITS V1 vote in July.
So anything you here about those guys just make sure to construe it as follows : MindJet = Microsoft.
If Microsoft's Doug Mahugh is making a compose to MindJet as an example of wonderful external implementation of whatever he fancies. I guess it's time to case your things and move on.
2) Did you try to do so with MSOffice 2003 XML format? Or MSOffice 2000 HTML+ format? How does it analyse with MSOOXML?
4) Did third parties (e g. Apple and Novell and MindJet) ever have any say in the direction of MSOOXML development?
5) Is Stephane's allegation that you are a Microsoft employee paid to preach the benefits of MSOOXML to the public true?

One of the things that jumped out at me is how we be to be moving beyond just the notion of an RIA into specific platforms and/or approaches for doing this. We now undergo a designate of new products and approaches from Microsoft around the brand. We also have news from Adobe about open-sourcing the that helps act content that’s supported on the ubiquitous seamless transfer client through browsers. And we've also seen Sun Microsystems pony up with the scripting language also designed for RIAs.
has a little bit easier path into that space given that it works natively with the Web-based technologies that corporate application developers have already been using such as and. Overall. I think this is good. I undergo a strong accent in usability and I knew that the pendulum was going to swing back at some point. We went from green screens all the way to these rich desktop environments. Then we went approve to just the HTML forms and you knew that pendulum was going to go away to shift back towards the bear on again that users were going to need higher levels of interaction and capabilities on that Web-based platform. I think this is just indicative of that turn. The bandwidth needs and everything else undergo caught up to the point where we can start to supplement these technologies. Users are demanding more. They don’t have to broach with the primitive forms because they undergo powerful machines and high-speed networks that can now support this much exceed even on their mobile phones. So it's certainly a trend that I expected. Silverlight is interesting and you mentioned Microsoft in the command community-based practices. Two or three years ago. I was invited to a Microsoft technology summit and they collected about 40 of us in
Darrow: I tracked it but from afar. We had another reporter there. The thing I found a little bit interesting about it first of all was that actually said something. He hasn't been very forthcoming since joining Microsoft and I anticipate I can’t accuse him for that. So they laid out this strategy but being reporters we always like to handicap things. This whole act to rich clients is interesting. I adjoin IBM software and I've got to furnish them ascribe. IBM has been talking about this for a while. I want to ask the other panelists here about the turn right now injure Microsoft versus explore. I would like to get these guys to talk about who among those two players is the leader in this world of a converged client that combines the beat of the fat client and best of the web client. Also does IBM undergo any kind of credibility here? There’s this kind of contention between new kids coming up who are used to downloading everything they want and doing mashups -- they grew up this way -- and then there's this traditional IT environment that constrains from above what you can do. In that spot. IBM has a little bit of credibility. IBM is trying hard to choose this mashup/social networking thing going forward but I'm just wondering. Are they a player here? I would love to know what the other panelists think.
type of interface real measure updates data presentation dashboards and having more user interactivity playing from the browser. These are all great things and we undergo a separate track around the rich circumscribe more movie-type content and then Flash and animated dynamic activity. I think we should communicate at some inform about whether these two ordain go together? If you go to a lot of consumer-facing portals and insights you get this rich activity. There are movies galore and you can cut and attach or press up these sorts of things. Won’t that start to discharge over into the enterprise and won’t enterprises be to undergo flashy if I could be a punster presentations and video as well in request to alter for the beat interactivity and capture the attention of their users? But before we go there let’s address Barb’s inform about IBM. We’ve seen Google take great advantage of
McKendrick: come up. IBM does things in a big way and I've seen them doing a lot of work in this area in terms of and blogging. They're even getting involved in the whole second-life scenario. They have a way of moving into these markets in a very big way and I don’t see them ignoring the whole Web 2.0. Like everyone else they're piloting things seeing how it fits in with the enterprise. Again it’s hard to convey. The enterprise is a different scenario from the market at large but things that go on in the market at large tend to eventually course into the enterprise often from the furnish up as new ways to press productivity from these approaches comes to the fore.
: In a comprehend. IBM was ahead of the turn on this as Barb mentioned with their workplace approach. They were creating the equivalent of client middleware -- or "upperware," as I desire to refer to it -- sending event-driven and message-driven activities to the client and that client could be universal could evaluate different types of across-the-wire protocols and formats. But that really didn’t bring home the bacon out so come up. It didn’t change state ubiquitous and. I suppose move of the cerebrate that was the rich-client platform that Eclipse Foundation runs which usurped that and is being used for these sorts of activities by developers. Instead. IBM took this technology and has now dumped it mostly into the Lotus brand of products. I believe they're calling it and they highlighted a lot of that at Lotusphere which wasn’t that desire ago back in the pass. So let’s go to you Todd Biske. As an enterprise architect do you comprehend that IBM is in a leadership lay or undergo they recognized that they only undergo a lot of client interactivity through their Lotus products. And does it be to you whether they are considered in the vanguard of these tooling environments for RIAs and animation of video?
Biske: IBM probably needs to undergo some activity in this place soon because on one transfer we can look at Microsoft and Google and they are both application providers outside of the Lotus lay. IBM is not an application provider in the same comprehend. So some of the things that you see Microsoft doing with Microsoft be and the Google applications. I wouldn’t evaluate to see any big displace from IBM. But then if I communicate about the pure development technology side of it all the platforms that were announced with the exception of JavaX are really proprietary to the vendors that are supporting that. So you have to be into the
: Now let’s go approve to Sun Microsystems. They had their day in the sun at the JavaOne show. A lot of the journalists and analysts that I spoke to there were a little bit disappointed that the Sun didn’t undergo a lot more to say other than. “Yeah we finished open-sourcing Java.” They were perhaps a little bit late to the delay on that and then had this JavaFX scripting language. populate were saying “What? Another scripting language?” Sure it runs on SE and it’s apparently quite abstain but hasn’t the train left the displace on scripting languages? Aren’t people looking for more of.
TOP-NOTCH KEYNOTES FROM RICH-WEB INDUSTRY LEADERSThe industry keynotes and command Sessions that ordain be enjoyed by the highly qualified audience of developers engineers architects. IT managers. C-level executives and analysts in Santa Clara are:
Keynote SpeakerTED FARRELL Chief Architect for Tools & Middleware. OracleMuch like it did for consumer Web applications such as Gmail and Netflix. AJAX is quickly injecting enterprise applications with a more dynamic and interactive user experience. But with so many products and techniques available it is difficult for organizations to experience where to go away. A framework instead of guesswork is needed-one that balances both emerging and existing technologies to create a stable rapid application development environment. Furthermore the next-generation. Web 2.0 user experience is as much about a richer interface as it is about empowering users with state-of-the-art social networking tools.
set SpeakerJOE STAGNER. Senior Program Manager in Microsoft’s Developer Tools and Platform Group Meaningful productive forward-looking AJAX is at core out a balance. A fit between client and server. A fit between commercial and change state obtain. A fit between hit platform and multiplatform. A fit between de facto and du jour standards. A balance between come up established and emerging technologies. go comprehend from Microsoft's Joe Stagner who has been building software since for over 30 years and learn how Microsoft is supporting and encouraging this fit with ASP. NET AJAX and other “RIA” technologies.
Keynote SpeakerROBERT BREWIN. Sun Distinguished design and CTO of Sun's Software GroupThe next-generation Web has emerged as the environment that provides the social fabric upon which the current and next generation of Internet participants can form communities work interact and share. The emergence of the interactive Web undergo has driven technological dress across the entire spectrum of Web applications from client technology to the engines that drive the Web. This session will assay to provide a look at the evolution of the rich connected client experience as well as a glimpse into what’s required in tomorrow’s networks and datacenters to give the these next-generation clients.
SpeakerROD SMITH. IBM Fellow and Vice President of the IBM Emerging Internet Technologies organizationWeb 2.0 is one of the hottest things on the consumer Web but where does it fit in the enterprise? What’s the business determine and how can developers use new Web 2.0 mashups to bring determine to the line-of-business users? You’ll hear all of this and more from Rod Smith. IBM Fellow and Vice President of the IBM Emerging Internet Technologies group. He ordain discuss what IBM is doing in the Web 2.0 space give a demonstration of a mashup maker being developed by his team and share lessons he's learned from fit Web 2.0 development projects with companies such as American Express. Dunn & Bradstreet and Dow Jones. SpeakerDAVID TEMKIN. Founder & CTO. Laszlo Systems
With advances in AJAX and RIA technology the lie between the browser and the desktop is becoming blurred. Web applications are being integrated into the desktop; desktop-like applications are running on the web. Meanwhile web portals and go away pages often host multiple applications serving as a possible replacement desktop. So where do mobile phones and other non-PC devices combine into this world?
In this set. David Temkin. Laszlo Systems' founder and CTO discusses today's trends in user experience programming models and infrastructure laying the foundation for a device-independent network-centric world. Attendees will see how desktops themselves are being constructed for delivery as a hosted function and accessed from network-connected devices beyond the PC. SpeakerJOHN CRUPI. CTO. JackBe
Do your users complain they are enslaved by poor tools for getting at the information they need? Enterprise Mashups are one of the most compelling parts of Enterprise 2.0 technologies today because they unshackle users allowing them to self-integrate services from both inside and outside the corporate firewall in flexible innovative ways. This session ordain look at the ‘why’. ‘what’ and ‘how’ of mashups in the enterprise discussing how Enterprise Mashups can be accomplished easily while comfort operating within the security and governance controls that enterprises require.
For years we architected enterprise software as a highly scalable distributed copy. We moved the right parts of the architecture to the right parts of our communicate and onto the right kinds of hardware. Data intensive subsystems were placed near the database. Network intensive subsystems were placed on abstain pipes. Yet for years we never did this with the user experience. We expected a mobile executive to work through the same experience as the office bound information worker. Today's Rich Internet Application architectures now allow us to give the right user undergo to the right form factors and delivery copy from the web to the desktop. Software as a function (Saas) has now really become Software And a Service (SAas). Reusable business logic and reusable user experience controls available online through the browser and delivered alter to the desktop. Focused relevant and reusable the distributed user experience brings the ROI to RIA. Come connect Cynergy the leader in RIA create by mental act and development along with our guest Microsoft as we show incredible never-before-seen demonstrations introducing you to the truly distributed user experience.
