THE Fiji Kava Council believes reports damning consumption of kava are like playing an old record and there were more dangerous products like alcohol cigarettes and drugs to pick on. Council chairman Ratu Joe Nawalowalo said people should understand that a lot of farmers depended on kava for a living. "They should leave us poor kava farmers alone because we are only trying to earn a decent living," council chairman Ratu Jo Nawalowalo said. Reacting to a recent report that children as young as 12 were drinking kava. Ratu Jo said people were taking to yaqona as a social drink more than beer and people should be thankful for that. "Parents need to be wary of what happens after and around the bowl and make sure that these are supervised and controlled sessions but what they are drinking has minimal effect compared to what happens to children around a carton of beer or a packet of cigarettes," he said. However. Fiji Council of Churches general secretary Reverend Isireli Kacimaiwai said the survey confirmed the worrying trend of yaqona drinking. "It is indeed a serious concern for the churches. One needs to ask why and if there are other creative ways of socialising that need to be encouraged than just having to settle for yaqona drinking." Arya Prathinidhi Sabha of Fiji president Kamlesh Arya said the survey reflected the values society held. Mr Arya said it was the adults who needed to set good examples by not including young people in their grog sessions." I'd buy it in a heartbeat," said Craft. "Then he made up this crazy promo."The Santa Cruz Sentinel picked up on the item and it got propelled to blogs. Strange that no one thought to call Craft for a mention. There are people looking for progressive millionaires who might be able to raise the capital to buy this strong signal that reaches the entire Monterey Bay and San Jose on a good day. Young people are more exposed to kava drinking now because it is widely consumed compared to 10-15 years ago says Fijian Teacher Association president Tevita Koroi.
