Young people are more exposed to kava drinking now because it is widely consumed compared to 10-15 years ago says Fijian Teacher Association president Tevita Koroi.
He was reacting to a survey conducted by the Health Ministry that highlighted children as young as 12-years-old were indulging in kava drinking.
"The chances of young people getting exposed to it today are much greater compared to before," Mr Koroi said.
"Apart from that kava is consumed almost everywhere in homes markets shops and other places and the chances of young people getting to consume kava is just great."
Mr Koroi said notably there had been an increase in kava shops in urban areas where anyone can buy a basin or two.
"These could be factors that contribute to the increasing be of young people consuming Kava," he said. The Soqosoqo Vakamarama general secretary Adi Finau Tabakaucoro said the conflict between social norm and a person's democratic right has made young populate more confident in doing what they like.
"It is indeed worrying to say that people as young as 12-years-old are drinking kava," Adi Finau said.
She said this was a clear example of the conflict between human rights and parental obligation.
"Parents now no longer have the confidence to discipline their children because of the rights that children undergo nowadays," she said.
The Ministry of Health survey shows an change magnitude in the be of people drinking kava now.
The survey shows males and females aged 12-17 years drinking it.
The majority in this age assort reportedly drink kava at least twice a week.
