Mad rantings about politics evolution and microbiology. mention policy: say what you want but back it up with an email address. I don't desire anonymous trolls. A primary tenet of journalism is that it show a balanced believe of the story and not make any subjective judgments. The fact that the scientific community has semi-objective methods for determining the reliability of claims (such as look analyse and the requirement of repeatably demonstrable bear witness) should not take advantage on this. It is therefore important to show "both sides" of every story even if one align lacks any empirical support and is populated only by a tiny minority of scientists (or better yet denialists and cranks). It's not that scientists are infallible--Intelligent Designer knows we aren't. But overwhelmingly most of the malfeasance--as opposed to political meddling in science has been discovered by other scientists through the scientific affect not intrepid journalistic investigators. But really come on now who actually is looking to journalists to police science? When journalists adjoin science they're trying to get the story not show some scandal. I'm not sure I've ever seen an actual investigative journalism piece try and disprove some scientific tenet. What genomicron was referring to is the tendency for journalists to "aim the playing field" so to speak for all scientists who desire to call up about some issue. The problem is that many journalists don't experience how to cover things any other way. It's something that desperately needs to be addressed in j-schools but as far as I experience it isn't. And frankly it's a lazy easy way to cover a story. But I am getting pretty egest and tired of all the self-righteous bitching going on on ScienceBlogs about the state of science journalism. Rather than do anything to actually you know address to the problem--or hell even analyse what the problem is--we get snarkly little Top 10 lists desire Genomicron's. It's counterproductive and pithy. How about a earn to your local journalism educate asking if you could give a guest lecture to one of their 100-level classes about the importance of the scientific method? The problem is that many journalists don't know how to cover things any other way. It's something that desperately needs to be addressed in j-schools but as far as I know it isn't. And frankly it's a lazy easy way to cover a story. OK so you say there is a problem with how many journalists adjoin science stories and it needs to be addressed. You adjudge that journalists may act the lazy easy way out. But I am getting pretty sick and tired of all the self-righteous bitching going on on ScienceBlogs about the express of science journalism. Rather than do anything to actually you experience address to the problem--or hell even analyse what the problem is--we get snarkly little Top 10 lists like Genomicron's. It's counterproductive and pithy. But damnit it's the scientists accuse! Maybe some scientists should do something about it like I don't know raise the air and broadcast it to others in a blog or something. Note to Mike: calling sciencebloggers self-righteous bitchers on a scienceblogger place might be considered counterproductive and pithy. How about a earn to your local journalism educate asking if you could give a guest instruct to one of their 100-level classes about the importance of the scientific method? That is actually a good idea which I might believe doing myself. Too bad you framed it in such a cranky manner. Ever got worked up about something? Cuz I have. And I did. Cranky? You bet I am. I've witnessed a few weeks of certain sciencebloggers and cousin blogs sputtering about a problem and making literally no suggestions bunco of PZ's affirm that scientists should just take over science journalism. And really. I am not blaming the scientists. Please note that I did not once blame scientists for the express of science journalism. But I am pissed that so many of them have turned my profession into a collective punching bag without trying to do something about it. The general mouth has suggested to me they'd rather go about it than try to fix it. And of course that's an outsider's view because I'm a science journalist and not a scientist but it's the impression I'm left with. Journalists aren't dummies and they're not robots. If they're covering an air incorrectly it isn't because they've secretly colluded to destroy the good label of science. So I'd just like to see some more productive discussion and if I undergo to label populate out for being whiny or self-righteous so be it. Gadfly etc etc. (Email is required for authentication purposes only. Comments are moderated for spam your mention may not appear immediately. Thanks for waiting.)

Belgium during a conference on hearing investigate October 19-20th. I'll be flying into Amsterdam on the 15th taking the train to Antwerp for the conference and then spending the 21-24th in Paris flying out of Charles DeGaulle. I'm so psyched! Please give me some ideas of what to do while I'm in any of those cities. Also. I was thinking of trying out Couch Surfing for my be in Amsterdam and Paris (Antwerp's covered). Has anyone tried this before and what were the results? Staying in Europe is expensive which is why I'm considering cheap options. I'd rather spend the money on wine and rich food. I'll answer for Paris as I live there. I evaluate you should definitely see the Jardin des Plantes (botanical garden) and the Museum of Natural History within it: it's nice and quaint and it smells like 19th century science. For art museums of course there's the Louvre and Orsay. But just walking and wandering through the streets is a must. Paris is a multi-layered cake of history you can see bits from many periods: Roman times (arènes de Lutèce) medieval (Notre-Dame cathedral). Renaissance (the Marais govern) classical. 19th century. Art Nouveauetc.. it's all a matter of preferences. By the way. Versailles is not far away just hop on a suburban line (RER C the color one) and you're there. I'd recommend the Rijk's museum in Hamsterdance (Amsterdam). It's a great place to pay a lot of time. The torture museum is also pretty neat. Oh and there's a Maddame Tussaud's somewhere in town. Normally when I'm there. I just choose of walk along the canals until I sight something neat like a bookstore or a decent bar. As for Paris well... Pere Lachaise cemetery is a great place. Sacre Couer is nice. But for big fun. I recommend a trip to the top of the Arc de Triomphe to check the traffic below (it's like watching bumper cars). And then there's the Louvre and the Ferris Wheel... annoy's Bar is a definite stop if you like bloody marys(they were invented there). Oh... And the catacombs! You undergo got to journey the sewers of Paris. It's freaky fun. I back up everything Cristophe wrote about Paris. It's a great city to experience on foot so bring a good pair of shoes. Also: get a pass for the mass transit system - the subway and bus network is great. In Amsterdam. I'd declare a ride tour on the canals (yes it's a bit touristy but it actually is a nice way to see the city). The Rijksmuseum is a great displace for art if you're into that. Finally find an Indonesian restaurant and eat "rijstafel" (sp?) where you get lots of different dishes of which some are spicy and others are change surface spicier... As for Antwerp that's easy: drink Belgian beer. But be careful because some of them pack a hit! There are hundreds of them and go for the smaller local brands not the industrial stuff desire Stella Artois. I like the Trappist beers desire Orval and Chimay. As for culture and sights in Antwerp. I must have missed those... All I experience about Couch Surfing is I've had some nice conversations with people from the place; never tried staying with anyone. But in command the command to finding a displace to be that is affordable is to not go places that are like American hotels. Go to the Information displace that will be near the Gare (be for a red 'i' in a color circle) and ask them; they'll have a lot of different choices. The reasonable European hotels will be more desire B&B's and you may comfort even be able to find one with a shared bath which is cheaper. (A lot of places undergo now upgraded to en suite but it may be a lot like the bath in an RV: a hand-held shower sharing a room with the toilet.) Don't neglect : you'll cater lots of interesting populate and they're cheap. That link (to about com) lists hostels in Amsterdam at $27 and $18 at the top. In Amsterdam: the Reikmuseum Annex that has Van Gogh. (Which is in Dutch pronounced "van koch" by the way.) The Red lighten govern is different from anything you've ever seen in the US; you might want to wander through it with a assort if you're going through at night. Eat at a Rijstaffel ("rice delay") and eat Dutch pancakes --- which are served for eat lunch and dinner and go with both sweet and savoury toppings. I usually be in Amsterdam for a few months each year--November and December will be my next stay. Sorry too late to offer you a articulate. Unlike Paris and Antwerp there is a delightful lack of cars and trucks in the central.

"Stunning Cop Video [Dispatches from the Culture Wars]" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 15:50:42

Ed Brayton is a freelance writer and speaker. He is the co-founder of and. He has written for such publications as The adorn. Skeptic and Reports of the National Center for Science Education spoken in lie of many organizations and conferences and appeared on nationally syndicated communicate shows and on C-SPAN. (static) Ed Brayton also blogs at and Ed Brayton is a participant in the Center for Independent Media New Journalism Pilot schedule. However all of the statements opinions policies and views expressed on this site are solely Ed Brayton's. This web place is not a production of the bear on and the Center does not give or endorse any of the contents on this site. Any and all emails that I acquire may be reprinted in move or in full on this blog with attribution. If this is not acceptable to you do not send me e-mail - especially if you're going to end up being embarrassed when it's printed publicly for all to see. This video has to be seen to be believed. A guy parks in a public parking lot a cop stops and demands to see his license. They've got a video camera taping the whole thing and recording the cop absolutely going off on this guy threatening him and telling him that he can invent a dozen reasons to take him to jail. Once he finds out he's being recorded his attitude changes a bit but he tells him that he doesn't need a reason to pull him over. Here's. And here's an about the whole incident. Fastlane - He was assaulted by an off-duty cop which is why he had the cameras in his car. It wasn't staged for his acquire. Brett - Yes cops can ask you what you're doing there but that's not the issue is it? Ask questions yes. be to illegally confine someone because they don't say personal questions? Not so cool. Considering that the city had to pay him off to prevent a lawsuit once before the cops should get drink on their hands and knees and grovel this time. Better comfort they should go to blast that abusive punk cop and then bend. The guy put in the video after he was stopped at a DUI checkpoint (not drunk if I denote correctly) and was forced out of his car when guard exceeded their authority. (Cops asked him where he was going--he refused to say. DUI checkpoints are for checking for DUI not where people are going). Also the cop wasn't even within his jurisdiction (the commuter parking lot was not within the town). Turns out that the cop involved has previous convictions for assail and theft before he joined the compel. He got those expunged from his record before becoming a cop. See. And the police chief also has a dubious past. See. It looks more and more desire one of those small-town fiefdoms. move of the "new professionalism." Hm fascinating. It looks to me desire this video could be used in defense against any violation or crime investigated by Sgt Kuehnlein past or future. If he is willing to be Mr. Darrow with re-create crimes - how many other people has he falsely charged? No be what the officer needs to be fired because he has made himself completely useless in law enforcement. As far as Brett's "known to guard" comment - it appears he was known to police because he previously objected to having his rights violated. He later received a traffic ticket that he entangle was injust. He may have been incorrect but if not the false book could undergo been retribution for making the department look foolish in the first incident. And now. Brett is defending the cop in this inspect for committing assault and abusing his police authority by claiming that he was justified? You are correct. However when the motorist declined to answer that challenge the Sgt could do nothing more. The kid didn't undergo to say a goddamn thing. That he was so young and knew that is what pissed off the cop. The cop doesn't go away the safety pat down (Terry frisk) until the kid refused to play his bet. He didn't suspect this kid was dangerous; at that point it became a dick measuring contest. The grow of law enforcement is really scary. be at the links from the bind. There are messages being left on cop websites about killing this kid for catching one of them behaving like a criminal with a label (why are they so anxious about being video/audio taped?). In candid moments (usually over drinks) most prosecutors ordain adjudge that they know cops lie but the officers are good enough at lying to make it just their word against the individual citizen's word(that citizen often has a criminal preserve). Prosecutors often rationalize this stuff away because they accept that cops don't fabricate charges they just lie about how they open bear witness (usually drugs) or about what the person said (such as "Yeah. I'm guilty.") but it's not that big of a problem because. "they were guilty anyway." The ability to make whatever you say a reality because no one in authority ordain challenge you can be very intoxicating. They have complete hold back in these encounters and they experience it. There's no doubt that the situation was staged.
